Following a call to action issued by the Luxembourg Farmers’ Centre two weeks ago, Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen on Monday met with representatives of ‘Cochy’, the association promoting Luxembourg pork, to carry out a market analysis.
Officials at the meeting highlighted the pig industry’s high exposure to market volatility and the challenges of creating accurate predictions for future developments.
According to a ministerial statement, Luxembourg pork farmers had already been “weakened by the repercussions of the pandemic” and a “significant rise in the cost of raw materials (including cattle feed) and energy”. Other issues raised at the meeting were lengthy administrative procedures and the search for new buyers.
Minister Hansen thus invited Cochy representatives to submit proposals that can be taken into account during the mid-term review of the current Agriculture Act, with the aim of helping the pig sector.
The politician from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) has further promised to hold regular discussions with representatives to ensure that she remains in touch with the industry.
