Esch-sur-Alzette officially opened its Christmas market on Friday evening, with visitors assembling from the afternoon onwards.

Preparations in Luxembourg City are ongoing as the markets are set to open on 21 November, a week before the first day of Advent. The capital's markets will take place at six different locations: Place d'Armes, Place Guillaume II, the Gëlle Fra, Place de Paris, Hamilius, and Kinnekswiss in the municipal park.

There will be something for everyone, whether old or young. Place Guillaume II will primarily be focused on younger visitors, with an eight-metre tall slide being erected.

Work began on the preparations after the All Souls holiday. The Place d'Armes may have a new layout this year, says city alderman Patrick Goldschmidt. "After the pandemic, we had a lot of comments that there was no gathering spot in the middle of the market anymore. Instead we had a closed rectangle design. This year we are trying to put space for people to gather at all the corners of the rectangle so it's easier for people to meet up and enjoy the market together. We've also set up the huts so they will be open at the sides."

The capital's Christmas markets will be open until 4 January.
