Grand Duke Henri has officially abdicated after 25 years as Luxembourg's head of state, marking the end of an era and paving the way for his son Guillaume to take over reigns.

After 25 years as Luxembourg's head of state, Grand Duke Henri officially abdicated on Friday morning, marking the end of an era for the Grand Duchy. The formal abdication ceremony took place at the Grand Ducal Palace, in the presence of the royal family, government officials, and invited dignitaries.

Henri, 70, ascended the throne in October 2000 following the abdication of his father, Grand Duke Jean. Over the course of his reign, he became known as a unifying figure, presiding over a period of political stability, economic growth, and the deepening of Luxembourg's role in international affairs.

Educated in Luxembourg, France, and Switzerland, Henri studied political science at the University of Geneva and later trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Before his accession, he served as Hereditary Grand Duke, preparing for his constitutional duties while also representing Luxembourg abroad.

As sovereign, Henri played a largely ceremonial role but remained a central symbol of continuity. His reign saw constitutional reforms that clarified the balance of power between the monarchy and the elected government, as well as Luxembourg's growing profile in the European Union and international diplomacy.

He is succeeded by his eldest son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, 43, who is moments away from becoming the new Grand Duke. Guillaume has long been prepared for the role, accompanying his father at official events and taking on increased responsibilities since being named Lieutenant-Representative in 2024.

Henri and his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, have five children. The couple have been active in various charitable initiatives, with Maria Teresa championing humanitarian and social causes during their time on the throne.

With this transition, Luxembourg now enters a new chapter as Henri enters retirement and Grand Duke Guillaume takes over.
