Training man's best friendHow Luxembourg's rescue dogs stay mission-ready

RTL Today
Between 12 and 18 May, the dogs of the CGDIS Cynotechnical Unit trained like true champions, taking on night exercises, waterside search missions, and operations in the casemates to prove they fear neither heights nor depths.

Over the course of a week, the Cynotechnical Unit of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) travelled across Luxembourg to conduct a series of emergency exercises. The training began at the Upper Sûre Lake, where various water’s-edge search operations were carried out.

It then continued in the east of the Grand Duchy, where the dogs trained in empty buildings and wooded areas. One session even took place in a completely unfamiliar environment for the rescue dogs: the casemates. Another exercise was held at night.

The week concluded with a rally and a large-scale drill. In collaboration with the Specialised High-Risk Environment Intervention Unit (GIS GRIMP) and the Logistics Support Centre (CSL), members of the Cynotechnical Unit organised a special training on the former Arbed industrial site. There, the rescue dogs had to locate people hidden in deep, hard-to-reach zones and tall buildings.

With this training, the CGDIS dogs stand ready for any mission, anytime, anywhere.
