The Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed that all procedures were properly followed during Bettendorf municipal council’s recent vote on the Nordstad merger project, validating the council’s decision to remain outside the unification plans.
The review was prompted by a complaint from a Bettendorf resident alleging procedural irregularities during the council’s session on 23 April.
During that meeting, council members reaffirmed their position against merging with the neighbouring municipalities of Diekirch, Ettelbruck, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, and Schieren – a stance that contradicts the results of a recent local referendum where most residents supported the continuation of exploratory talks.
After examining the complaint, the Ministry concluded that the council had adhered to all proper protocols during its deliberations. This finding means the municipality’s decision to withdraw from merger talks will stand unchanged.
