Friday 16 May marks the official start of the expansion works of the tram line Kirchberg2A, which will link the Grand Duchess Charlotte bridge with the European School.
Construction of a new section of Luxembourg’s tram line along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer in Kirchberg officially commenced on Friday 16 May, marked by a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Mobility and Public Works Minister Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer, Alderman Patrick Goldschmidt, and representatives of the media.
The new segment will connect the Pfaffenthal–Kirchberg interchange to the European School, extending the tram route further across Kirchberg. While preliminary works began in February, the project has now entered a more intensive phase. The section is scheduled to be operational by the start of the 2027 school year.
The development will include a landscaped central platform featuring greenery and a double line of trees along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, creating a pleasant and environmentally friendly feature to the area.
At this stage, Luxtram has not published any dates establishing the start of construction for the second new segment meant to link the new district. The company mentions a “second stage” of construction without adding any details.
However, as reported by our colleagues at RTL Infos, this second stage is part of the National Mobility Plan 2035. The new district Kuebebierg is expected to open for residents in 2030.
Thus, one can conclude that this new segment will only be done by 2030, especially since both new lines to expand the tram network in Kirchberg will be constructed simultaneously.
Belair, Hollerich, Gasperich, and Cessange will also have access to the tram via an extension on Route d’Esch which is currently being studied. At present, the conception studies are still ongoing.
