Travel between Luxembourg and Germany is set to become more convenient with the introduction of additional train stops in the Trier region.
On Wednesday, the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) announced plans to improve train connections between Luxembourg and Germany, set to take effect from 3 March 2025.
The improvements will significantly boost rail access to the western part of Trier, with five new stops being added to the network: Trier Zewen, Trier Euren, Trier West, Trier Pallien, and Trier Hafenstraße. According to CFL, these additions aim to provide better connectivity for residents and commuters in the region.
Notably, the Trier West and Trier Pallien stations will offer convenient bus links to the city centre. Additionally, the proximity of the Trier Pallien stop to the University of Trier is expected to benefit students by providing a more accessible travel option.
Passengers can continue to rely on two trains per hour running Monday through Friday. The updates also mark the official relocation of the Luxembourg City-Wasserbillig-Trier-West-Wittlich line, now permanently rerouted west of the Moselle, as originally planned by SPNV-Nord.
In response to growing commuter demand, SPNV-Nord is introducing the RB87 line to serve passengers from the Kreuz-Konz area. The RB87 will run during peak morning and evening hours, connecting Luxembourg and Trier via Trier Hauptbahnhof, Trier Süd, Karthaus, Kreuz-Konz, Igel, Wasserbillig, Mertert, Manternach, Wecker, Betzdorf, Roodt, Munsbach, Oetrange, Sandweiler-Contern, Cents-Hamm, and Luxembourg. Travellers from Konz will also have transfer options at Wasserbillig, with access to Luxembourg’s regional train network.
Additionally, two trains per hour will run on weekdays, stopping at key commuter stations such as Munsbach and Wecker.
Changes are also being made to the direct service between Luxembourg and Düsseldorf (departing at 06:10 AM from Luxembourg Station). Due to modifications in Germany’s rail network, this train will now run as a combined service until Wasserbillig, where it will then split into two separate routes: one train will continue to Wittlich via Trier West, the other will head to Düsseldorf via Trier Hauptbahnhof.
Passengers can find full timetable details and route updates on the CFL website, or via the CFL mobile app.
