Mayor Lydie Polfer has requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Luc Frieden to address the ongoing challenges in the Gare neighbourhood, citing frustration over unresolved cases and a lack of follow-up.

Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer has called for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Luc Frieden to address the ongoing issues in the Gare neighbourhood, describing the situation as untenable.

Speaking at the "CityBreakfast" press briefing on Tuesday, Mayor Polfer emphasised that the problems in the Gare neighbourhood are not merely a perception but a stark reality. On Friday, she sent a letter to Prime Minister Frieden, stating, "This dramatic situation can no longer be accepted." In the letter, Polfer called for the creation of a task force involving key ministers, including the Minister for Home Affairs and the Minister of Justice, to address the challenges more effectively.

Polfer referenced statements made by Prosecutor General Martine Solovieff during her department's New Year reception, which highlighted systemic issues. "If two-thirds of the cases are closed without action, I'm sorry, but then we can no longer speak of the rule of law," Polfer said, adding that it is "a matter of impunity" for offenders and a failure to protect those affected.

While acknowledging improvements brought by the local police unit, Polfer noted that the lack of follow-up on official reports has led to widespread frustration. Residents see the police taking action, but nothing changes, she explained. "This isn't new – we've discussed it repeatedly, but now the figures confirm it," Polfer said.

Polfer has requested an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister to analyse the situation, identify weaknesses, and implement effective measures to restore safety and order in the Gare neighbourhood.
