A youth basketball coach in Walferdange was assaulted during a game by a parent, sparking outrage from the club, but the accused team claims the story is "one-sided" and awaits the referees' report.
The local basketball club in Walferdange, BBC Résidence Walferdange, expressed shock on Tuesday following a disturbing incident involving one of its coaches.
According to the club, the coach was physically assaulted in front of the players by a father who also served as an official for the opposing team. The coach required hospital treatment and has since filed a formal complaint with the police.
The president of the club, Alain Weins, described the incident as "disastrous" for the sport, calling it "both terrible and sad". Weins emphasised that physical and verbal aggression have no place in sport and urged the Luxembourg Basketball Federation (FLBB) to take action.
Shortly after the Walferdange basketball club posted its statement on social media, the opposing team from Soleuvre responded, calling the post a "one-sided opinion" that does not reflect the actual events. The BBC AS Soleuvre club stated it would await the referees' report before commenting further and confirmed it had submitted multiple witness statements to the FLBB. The club’s president, upon enquiry by our colleagues from RTL.lu, clarified that no additional comments would be made at this time.
Meanwhile, the FLBB’s administrative council is set to address the issue during its meeting on Tuesday evening, according to sources within the basketball community. The matter has reportedly been added to the agenda.
