A recent spike in thefts on Luxembourg's trams and other public transport has prompted police to issue safety advice to help passengers avoid falling victim to pickpockets.
Luxembourg police have issued a warning about a recent increase in thefts on public transport, with trams being a particular hotspot for pickpocketing.
The authorities report that "an increasing number of thefts on public transport, especially on trams, have been reported in recent weeks."
Pickpockets often exploit crowded conditions and moments of inattention to steal valuables such as phones, headphones, wallets, and laptops. In many cases, victims do not realise they have been targeted until long after the theft has occurred.
To help passengers protect themselves, the police have shared the following preventive measures:
- Stay alert in crowded vehicles, avoid distractions, and maintain distance from strangers whenever possible.
- Avoid displaying the contents of your wallet or bag in public.
- Store valuables like wallets or smartphones in the inside pockets of jackets, which are harder for thieves to access.
- Never leave handbags or personal belongings unattended.
- Secure handbags by locking them between your arm and body, with the opening facing inward.
- Ensure handbags are always closed.
