In a study that analysed over 34 million flights, encompassing 92% of global aviation, Luxair was ranked as one of the most environmentally harmful companies in the aviation industry.

Placing 104th out of 119 contenders, Luxair's reputation could be blemished amongst the environmentally conscious due to a recent study published by the Berlin based non-profit organization Atmosfair. The study analysed CO₂ emissions in relation to the distance travelled, weight of the plane, efficiency and load factors.

The study suggests that the best "efficiency results occur when the airlines operate modern aircraft optimized for the
route distance and passenger load, configure the planes with a high number of seats, and utilize both the seating capacity and cargo space effectively". Which begs the question: why is Luxair not up to standard?

However, the study goes on to report that some "airlines prioritize different factors when tailoring their offerings to customers. While Atmosfair does not assess or critique these priorities, it evaluates the resulting CO₂ emissions that are influenced by them." So, while multiple factors are in play, the study maintains the focus on the resulting emissions.

The research was extensive and included 173 aircraft types, which makes up for 97% of the market and the results could be worrying for the Luxembourgish airline.
