Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden on Monday called for a stronger European Union presence on the global stage, advocating for a joint EU army and a permanent seat for the bloc on the United Nations Security Council. Addressing students and teachers at the College of Europe in Natolin, Poland, Frieden argued that recent global challenges demonstrate the need for greater EU self-reliance and coordination in defence, migration, competitiveness, and energy transition.
Frieden highlighted the importance of unified defence capabilities, pointing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a wake-up call for Europe. He emphasised that peace and respect, enshrined in the UN charter, “can no longer be taken as a given”.
In his speech, the Prime Minister urged European citizens to take action, underscoring the role of courage and self-determination in shaping a hopeful future for Europe. “This is a challenge for you, for me, and for all European citizens. To act, to dare, and to be courageous,” he said.
