The Pirates have been navigating treacherous waters in recent weeks with the departure of MP Ben Polidori and ongoing tensions between MPs Sven Clement and Marc Goergen.
Now, Daniel Frères is threatening to leave the Pirate Party and to found an alternative party. The statutes for a new 'Animal Rights and Human Rights Party' have already been drafted, according to Frères, who mentioned to RTL that he has already gathered several potential members who are actively working in the field of animal protection.
This revelation came in response to a question about whether he was considering leaving the Pirate Party amid the ongoing conflict between its two MPs, Sven Clement and Marc Goergen. Frères explained that he has been working behind the scenes to mediate between the two, as he has done in the past. However, if the dispute is not resolved soon, Frères stated that he plans to chart his own course, a message he has clearly communicated to both Clement and Goergen.
The Pirate Party is planning to hold a party congress this autumn, during which new statutes will also be adopted. Speculation is growing that the congress may also serve as a platform for discussions on whether one of the two MPs should leave the party. Frères believes this to be the wrong call and believes any disagreements should be reconciled before the congress. If the two MPs are unable to resolve their issues then Frères sees himself leaving the party for good by the end of the year.
Would Frères keep his seat at the Remich municipal council?
Marc Goergen and Sven Clement have been at odds with each other with both MPs accusing each other of financial enrichment at the expense of the party and of creating a toxic work environment. Tensions reached a boiling point when MP Ben Polidori announced his exit from the party, citing disagreements in the party's parliamentary team's internal functioning.
Currently, Daniel Frères holds a seat as a municipal councillor for Remich. Frères has yet to decide whether he would return his mandate to the Pirates or retain it, should he choose to leave the party.
