Max Hengel, Mayor of Wormeldange and MP for the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), has passed away at the age of 47 following a prolonged battle with cancer.
The news was confirmed to RTL by sources close to the politician. Hengel publicly revealed his diagnosis of intestinal cancer in 2023. The CSV's local chapter in the Eastern constituency also announced his passing.
His party describes him as "such a loving, devoted and helpful person, who always had a smile on his face," and mourned his death "at such a young age," before continuing "despite his illness, he never lost his fighting spirit, which he managed to maintain right to the end."
Hengel, whose political career began in 1998, served as Mayor of Wormeldange from November 2017 to November 2020. Afterwards, he continued his involvement in local governance as a member of the municipal executive board (Schäfferot). In July 2023, he was re-elected as Mayor of Wormeldange.
In 2022, Max Hengel was sworn in as an MP in the Chamber of Deputies. He was re-elected in the legislative elections of October 2023. During his time as an MP, Hengel was involved in several key policy areas and notably served as the president of the Parliamentary Health Commission.
Beyond politics, Hengel was also deeply involved in local sports, serving as the president of the basketball club Musel Pikes for seven years. He is survived by his wife and two sons. RTL extends its condolences to his family.
Hengel's passing will lead to a change in the Chamber of Deputies. It is expected that 31-year-old Ricardo Marques from Echternach will succeed him in parliament.
