The A13 was unexpectedly flooded on 19 May, leading to closures. Pirate MP Marc Goergen submitted a request for further information on how the situation came to pass.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, said the infrastructure on the A13 had been unable to handle the mass of water and earth surging from a nearby field as a result of heavy rainfall.
The localised flooding resulted in a temporary closure of the motorway between the Markusbierg tunnel and Mondorf. There had been no flood warnings from weather forecasters such as Meteolux for that day.
Backes said the flooding was caused by heavy rain showers with up to 30 litres per square metre in an hour. The torrential rain washed soil from a freshly planted field alongside the A13. The minister added that the flooding was not caused by infrastructure defects, nor by any construction errors.
Drainage systems are designed only for limited amounts of water and cannot cope with extreme weather conditions, which can cause local accumulations of water. This is why motorists must adapt their driving in extreme conditions.
