Déi Lénk (The Left) submitted a proposal to the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday covering the topic of abortion as a constitutional right.

Voluntary termination of a pregnancy should be enshrined in Luxembourg's constitution, as is already the case in neighbouring France, said MP Marc Baum.

Abortion in Luxembourg is currently subject to regulations by a law passed a decade ago.

The Left say their proposal to revise the constitution represents a symbolic act that would reaffirm the fundamental right to abortion.

A two-thirds majority in the Chamber of Deputies is required to confirm a constitutional amendment. In a statement, Déi Lénk said the right to contraception should also be added into the constitution. The proposal has now been passed to the Council of State for their advice.
