After sustaining damage from the rising waters of the Sûre three weeks ago, the pontoon bridge in Diekirch has been reopened for pedestrian use.

This temporary structure serves as a replacement for the 'Ficelles' bridge (Ficellesbréck), which was closed two months ago due to rust detected on its steel cables. Authorities overseeing the bridge's maintenance expressed concerns about its structural integrity, prompting the need for an alternative. Renovation work is slated to commence in 2025 and is expected to last a year, according to the Bridges and Roads Authority.

Recognising the urgency of the situation, the municipality of Diekirch swiftly installed a pontoon bridge near the footbridge connecting Diekirch park to the Sauerwiss neighborhood in early May. This alternative route was essential for the many students who rely on crossing the Sûre to access schools on the Merten campus.

However, just two months after its installation, the pontoon bridge fell victim to flooding. Fortunately, repair efforts were promptly undertaken, and the footbridge is once again accessible to the public.

Local authorities have announced plans for a more durable alternative, similar to the structure installed on the N27 between Erpeldange and Michelau. The possibility of demolishing the 'Ficelles' bridge entirely to make way for a new one has also been raised. Consultations with Minister for Public Works Yuriko Backes, regarding these proposals, are expected in the near future.
