Four businesses in Luxembourg have been awarded the "Top Employers" certification, including the country's second-largest employer, Amazon.

The Top Employers Institute, which certifies excellency in employment conditions around the world, has bestowed the certification of “Top Employer” to four companies operating in Luxembourg: global banking and financial service provider HSBC, American e-commerce behemoth Amazon, the German-owned Lidl supermarket chain and the French multinational bank BNP Paribas Group.
Each year, the institute conducts a rigorous assessment, certifying companies that excel in fostering talent development, maintaining positive working conditions, and promoting a culture of excellence.

Companies undergo evaluation in various HR dimensions, including talent strategy, learning and development, compensation, and benefits.

In Luxembourg, Amazon overtook the Post Group as the country’s second largest private employer last summer, employing around 4,570 staff and coming second only to transport operator CFL. The world’s largest e-commerce site recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of operations in Luxembourg, where it currently houses the company’s pan-European logistics and supply chain teams, as well as a variety of other roles, across its seven offices.

Upon receiving the Top Employer certification for a second year running, Amazon EU vice president Jorrit Van der Meulen commented that the company was hoping to become “Earth’s Best Employer”. Last year, the European Court of Justice blocked the European Commission’s bid to force Amazon to repay 250 million euros in back taxes to the Grand Duchy.

With six sites across the Grand Duchy, the BNP Paribas Group employs just under 4,000 staff in Luxembourg, offering private banking and wealth management solutions to its customer base. In 2023, the Group posted record profits of 10.2 billion euros. During the coronavirus pandemic, the bank announced intentions to support the Luxembourgish economy, in reciprocation for government aid received back in 2008.

HSBC established a presence in Luxembourg in 1977 and counts around 240 employees as of 2023.

Budget supermarket chain Lidl has 13 stores across the Grand Duchy, with plans to expand further, and employs around 430 staff. It celebrated its 20th anniversary in Luxembourg back in 2021.
