Luxembourg City has not lost one, but two bakeries with the recent bankruptcy of La Table du Pain in Luxembourg. Both locations, one a longtime stalwart of the City Centre lunch scene and the other a fixture of the Gare district at Place de Paris, closed down after 25 years of business.
The first location opened on Avenue Monterey in 1996, with a second branch in the Gare district at Avenue de la Liberté. News outlet Virgule.lu first broke the news of the bread, breakfast and lunch destination's troubles, citing the two companies overseeing La Table du Pain's day-to-day business — Le Comptoir du Pain and Liberpainas — as having "declared themselves bankrupt" on Wednesday in the Luxembourg District Court.
Over the past few years, La Table du Pain suffered financial losses related to external events: the economic downturn caused by the Covid pandemic, inflation, high energy prices — as well as the increasing cost of necessary resources such as flour supplied from Ukraine — all played a crucial role.
In 2023, Luxembourg saw a total of 935 bankruptcies, marking a 7% decrease compared to the previous year when nearly 1,000 companies failed, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) and the Ministry of Justice. However, the third quarter of 2023 did see a noticeable increase in bankruptcies, compared to the same time period in the previous year.
