National Roads Administration director Roland Fox responded to RTL's questions over the state of the country's roads on Thursday morning.
Fox said snow removal teams were active from 1am on Thursday morning, with 3,000 kilometres of roads to clear.
According to Fox, the chaos on the roads was caused by the high volume of traffic compared to the previous day, when a nationwide red alert saw schools shut and employees advised to stay at home. The increased traffic also contributed to slowing down the work of clearance teams, the director added.
After what he deemed a "stressful" morning, Fox said that the Administration could salt the roads, but if no vehicles drive on them, the snow is quick to accumulate again. "There are limits to the effectiveness of salt," he explained.
It is doubtful, however, whether these explanations will be sufficient for the many commuters who spent hours stuck in traffic this morning.
