Last week, the law project on the Highway Code was published in the Memorial newsletter, detailing new fines for driving violations.

While further legislative projects envision fines to increase from €145 to €250 for using mobile phones whilst driving, offenders can now already lose four points on their licence instead of just two.

There are also changes to the screening process for drugs, using less resource-intensive methods to control the process. Electronic communication methods will also be improved.

The licence plate system is also undergoing changes, with registration numbers no longer applying to the vehicle, but to the person who applied for it.

Reserving a personalised number plate now costs four times as much as it used to, as prices soar to €200. The reservation is only valid for twelve months if the applicant fails to register a vehicle.

Finally, the waitlist for 4-digit number plates has been abolished.
