But fear not, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you stay cool and safe during this period of intense heat.

Vulnerable groups

Children and the elderly, who are less tolerant of extreme heat, require special attention during such periods. Anne Vergison from the Ministry of Health advises against exposing young children to direct sunlight and emphasises the importance of maintaining a constant airflow when children are in pushchairs to prevent overheating. She also warns of the fatal consequences of leaving children in cars during such high temperatures.

Elderly people also face challenges in adapting to the heat. Dr Vergison suggests taking similar precautions as with children, such as avoiding direct sunlight and ensuring sufficient hydration. She reminds us to encourage older relatives or friends to drink enough water during the heatwave.

In for the long haul

For those planning to enjoy the sun, it’s crucial to remember to wear sunscreen and limit time spent in direct sunlight. Hydration is key during such hot weather, with a recommended daily water intake of at least 1.5 litres. If you’re exercising, you should increase your water intake accordingly.

Looking ahead, Kachelmann predicts that this summer will see temperatures rise above 30 degrees more frequently. As such, it’s important to prepare for a hotter future.

Keeping cool at home is another challenge during a heatwave. Dr Vergison points out that the advantage this weekend is the overnight cooling. She recommends closing all curtains during the day to keep the heat out, then reopening them in the evening to let cool air into the house.

Kachelmann also advises creating draughts during the day and using fans to circulate air. For those with a heat pump, they can use it to cool their house during the summer, providing a welcome respite from the heat.

As Luxembourg and the rest of Europe brace for a scorching weekend, these tips provide a guide to staying safe and cool. With climate change predictions suggesting that such heatwaves may become more frequent, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for extreme heat.
