Fay Ootes and Georg Poensgen, two students from the European School in Kirchberg talked about their project week around mental wellbeing and the stigma that still remains.
Fay Ootes and Georg Poensgen who members of the Pupils' Committee at the European School of Luxembourg recently appeared on The Sam Steen Show on RTL Today Radio to discuss the Wellbeing Week at their school.
When asked about the reason behind their project they replied: “We felt that in our school system it just isn’t talked about enough, we felt the need to raise awareness.” This marks the second time they have organized this project, which took a few months to coordinate with participants and acquire necessary permissions from the school. Despite the challenges, they are pleased with the smoother process this time around.
This year's edition includes a packed programme: taking place from Monday 24 April through 28 April, a number of talks, seminars and panel discussions are on the schedule, featuring mental health professionals all across the board.
On Wednesday, a professional will demonstrate how students can process their emotions photographically and on Thursday they have a professional on Tibetan mediation come in. Additionally, students can participate in free yoga lessons during their lunch breaks. One seminar will be mandatory for younger pupils to increase their awareness.
The students noticed that many of their peers are struggling in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, having been robbed of a lot of social contacts during two of their most formative years. Now, George and Faye want to remove the stigma and the taboo around asking for help, which is why the slogan for their wellbeing week is “let’s talk about it”.
"Maybe this week will help people understand that they can look out for help and talk to our school psychologists.”, one of them stated in the interview.
