
In 2021, the Ministry of Health recorded 4,338 deaths in Luxembourg - 101 fewer than in 2020.
According to the Ministry of Health, 2,132 women and 2,206 men died in 2021. The average age of death among men was 75, while for women it was 81.
On average, 12 people died per day, which corresponds to 83 per week or 362 per month. The number of deaths varied by month and season, with 429 deaths recorded in January 2021 compared to 292 in August.
In 94.5% of cases, the deaths were caused by disease or illness. 5.5% were due to external factors. Slightly more than half of all deaths took place in hospital, with 25% in nursing homes, 19% at home and 2% in other places.
The report confirmed that cancer accounted for around 25%, or 1,098, of deaths in 2021, making it the most common cause of death.
618 men died of cancer in 2021. The most common cause was lung cancer, which killed 135 patients, followed by prostrate cancer and colon cancer (68 and 52 cases respectively).
480 deaths among women were attributed to a type of cancer, the most common being breast cancer, which took 89 patients. It was followed by lung cancer (73 victims) and pancreatic cancer (35 victims).
The second most common cause of death in 2021 was cardiovascular disease with 1,046 victims. 540 of the deceased were female and 506 male.
Together, cancer and cardiovascular diseases were responsible for 49.4% of deaths in 2021 .
As in 2020, Covid-19 was the third most common cause of death in 2021. 233 men and 204 women died in 2021 due to the coronavirus.
Finally, 64 stillbirths were registered in 2021, compared to 66 the previous year.
