Marc Angel has won an internal vote within the S&D political group and may succeed former Greek MEP Eva Kaili as vice president of the European Parliament.

Kaili was recently removed from her position following accusations of corruption.

Marc Angel, who serves as MEP for the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), confirmed to our colleagues from RTL.lu that he submitted his candidacy and won the Wednesday afternoon internal vote within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D).

There were eight candidates in total.

At this time, Angel is therefore designated to become vice president. The European Parliament must ratify his nomination during a plenary session the following week.

It is possible that other parliamentary groups will put forward rival candidates.

There are a total of 14 vice presidents who support Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament.

Christophe Hansen is one of five Quaestors, all of whom are also members of the presidency. They have a mandate of two and a half years.
