Following allegations made by some of Semedo's former staff members, the Luxembourgish MEP will meet with Roberta Metsola later this week.
According to information obtained by RTL, Monica Semedo received a letter from the President of the European Parliament, in which the latter requested a face-to-face meeting. Scheduling may prove challenging, given the turbulent situation within the European institution following a large-scale corruption affair.
For the second time, Semedo faces accusations of bullying and harassment by multiple former staff members. However, this time Semedo is also accused of subjecting her staff to "unrealistic expectations" and "sabotaging their private lives."
As this is the second time that Semedo has to answer for this kind of misconduct, sanctions are likely to be more severe and might go beyond the 15-day suspension she received in January 2022. While suspended, an MEP receives no remuneration.
Since her election in 2019, eight staff members have left the MEP's office.
Once the meeting between Semedo and Metsola has taken place, the President of the European Parliament will likely announce the sanctions recommended by the Advisory Committee on Harassment during the first session of the new year.
In a press release issued a fortnight ago, the former Democratic Party (DP) MEP and current member of the Renew-Europe group denounced what she describes as "defamation and insults" against her and refuted all accusations made by her former staff members. Semedo also stated that she had been denied the presence of a lawyer during her testimony.
