Luxembourg City already operated a tram from 1875 to 1964. The much newer version has now been connecting the different districts of the capital for five years.
In conversation with RTL, Luxtram director André Von der Marck described the last five years as a success story: "More than 80,000 people ride the tram on a daily basis. It therefore accomplishes its mission of public utility. The tram has by now become an icon of the capital and many people can no longer imagine the city without the tram."
According to Von der Marck, the number of tram passengers has steadily increased over the past couple of years thanks to the opening of additional stops.

He elaborated on future plans for the tram: "A bridge is currently being built next to the tram warehouse and above the motorway ... so that we can reach [Findel] airport in 2024."
Extensions are also under construction at the other end of the line in Bonnevoie. First test runs are expected to take place a year from now.
"The goal is to build a network over the next couple of years. While we currently transport more than 80,000 daily passengers, that number is expected to reach close to 300,000 in ten to 15 years. First projects in relation to that goal will be presented next year."
