On Monday, Minister of Defence François Bausch provided updates on Luxembourg's military activities in a session of the respective Chamber commission.
The meeting of the Chamber's defence commission was held behind closed doors and Minister Bausch later only provided little insight into what was discussed. He explained that Luxembourg sent more than just defensive weaponry to Ukraine and that the total support already amounts to €50 million.
The commission also discussed the Grand Duchy's activities in Mali. 22 Luxembourgish soldiers are currently on the ground in the context of a European mission. However, the situation in the west African country is continuously deteriorating and safety cannot be ensured, which is why officials discussed the future of the mission.
A possible avenue forward would be to advance the mission evaluation, initially scheduled for 2023, to this year. This would mean that Luxembourg's participation is over at the end of 2022. In front of the commission, Minister Bausch expressed his opinion that this scenario represents the most adequate choice.
