The new municipality called ‘Grosbous-Wal’ is estimated to materialise on 1 September 2023 in case of a majority vote in the Chamber of Deputies, and will have its seat in Grosbous. With this merge, it will bring the number of municipalities in Luxembourg to 101.

According to the merger bill, the number of municipal counsellors will increase from nine to twelve, while the college of mayors and aldermen will be composed of one mayor and three aldermen. Thus, each merged municipality will be entitled to two members at the heart of the college of mayors and aldermen.

The composition of the municipalities’ bodies will be brought into line with the municipal law at the time of complete council renewal following the municipal elections in 2029. The first municipal council of Grossbus-Wahl will be constituted after the municipal elections on 11 June 2023 and will remain in place at least until the full renewal in 2035.

The merger of the municipalities of Grosbous and Wahl will be accompanied by a special state aid amounting to approximately €4.8 million, financed by the Ministry of Interior. The aid will be paid out in instalments over the course of 5 years as of 1 September 2023.

The Minister of Interior underlines her support of the merger process and insists on the principle of voluntary mergers. Tania Boffering also emphasised the political courage of municipal leaders who take such an initiative.
