The Omicron wave has led to private laboratories facing an even higher demand than before, making them a key player in the fight against the pandemic.

However, the exceedingly long queues at testing centres are causing tension among the staff. Employees are reportedly increasingly exposed to aggression and their daily lives are marked not only by regular overtime, but also by extremely high work rates.

During the health crisis, private laboratories have become "a real hub of social dumping", the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) criticises in a press release.

The trade union therefore wishes to continue to raise public and political awareness of the "inequalities and poor working conditions that employees of private laboratories face on a daily basis", the OGBL said in its statement.

The pandemic has shown "how essential the medical biology sector is for the healthcare system", which is why the trade union thinks it should receive more support than it currently does.
