In 2020 Luxembourg became the first country in the world to offer full public transport services free of charge, including trains, buses and trams.
Despite the lack of fares, a large number of people are still opting to travel in first class when taking Luxembourg trains, said Minister of Transport François Bausch.
Since free public transport was introduced last year, some 14.5 million passengers have travelled on CFL trains. Among these, around 295,000 people chose to travel in first class, which is not included in the scheme, thereby paying for their tickets.
The national rail network reported sales of €414,000 over the last 18 months for first class travellers.
Bausch reported these figures in response to a parliamentary questio raised by Pirate Party MP Marc Goergen.
