EchternachHopping procession cancelled for the second year in a row

RTL Today
While it is one of Luxembourg's oldest traditions, Echternach's traditional hopping procession has had to be cancelled for the second year in a row.

The residents of Echternach nevertheless still paid their respects to Saint Willibrord, whose relics are worshipped every year in the local basilica.

In normal years, the first pilgrims, some coming from far away, arrive as early as 5 am in the morning. In 2021, the first event was a service that started at 7 am. A maximum of 150 people were allowed to attend the service – nothing compared to the thousands of people who flock to Echternach in normal times.

Despite the circumstances, Echternach’s local brass band put on their uniforms anyway and provided musical entertainment to mark the occasion.
