The majority of Luxembourg's cultural activities will be able to resume from 29 May, under strict hygiene measures.

100 exhibitions and over 1,000 cultural activities were cancelled over the lockdown period from 14 March to 11 May, affecting around a million visitors.

Luxembourg's cultural sector formed one of the hardest hit industries in the country, affecting 12,200 employees and freelancers - 5.3% of the workforce. Around 5 million euros will now be made available to relaunch their work - although large events are still prohibited until 31 July at least.

Minister of Culture Sam Tanson presented the new measures at a press conference on Wednesday morning, after museums and libraries were allowed to reopen on 11 May.

From 29 May, theatres, cultural centres, concert halls and cinemas will be allowed to join them - however, hygiene measures will still apply. Events will be seated only, with visitors obliged to book in advance and maintain a two metre distance from others.

The 5 million euros set aside to revive the industry will be divided into several categories, including compensation for loss of income, investment in museums and cultural sites, and support for freelancers, 287 of whom have requested financial aid.
