The housing project will breathe new life into the former industrial site, covering 60 hectares across the municipalities of Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange.

The new housing district, tentatively named "Uelzecht" (Alzette) was presented on Thursday evening.

The 60 hectare site, 90% of which is found in the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette, will be able to house around 10,000 people by 2040. Copenhagen-based firm COBE Architects won the contract, seeing off four other international architecture firms.

Agora president Frank Vansteenkiste, the developer responsible for monitoring the project, said COBE had shown flexibility and innovation, which would in turn assist development.

The new district will benefit from rail connections, bus routes and even the tram. A minimum of 30% of housing will be offered at moderate cost, and three primary schools and a secondary school are expected to be included in the development to serve new residents.

Before renovation and conversion work begins, the old wastelands will have to be sanitised, which can take up to three years.
