A recent press release published by Statec, Luxembourg's official statistics office, has revealed that Luxembourg's population grew by 11,889 individuals over the course of 2018.

On 1 January 2019, the Grand Duchy's population was recorded at 613,894. Of that number, 47% of the population remains non-Luxembourgish, compared to the 53% of Luxembourgish citizens making up the country's population.

Net immigration remains high but percentage of non-Luxembourgers dropped

The migratory balance for 2018 observed by Statec lay at 10,659. 24,644 people immigrated into the country compared to 13,985 who emigrated. In terms of the migratory balance, the French have overtaken the Portuguese since 2014. In 2018, more Italian moved to Luxembourg than Portuguese citizens. However, the Portuguese remain the largest community amongst Luxembourg's non-citizen population.

The percentage of Luxembourg's foreign population did drop in 2018 due to the rise in applications for citizenship and successful naturalisation. 6,950 residents acquired citizenship. Adding to this is the fact that non-Luxembourgish minors will have also automatically acquired Luxembourgish citizenship once one of their parents successfully naturalised.

As a result, Statec recorded a very slight drop in the percentage of Luxembourg's non-citizen population, which now stands at 47.5% (-0.4% compared to 2018). Despite this slight decrease, net immigration remains the predominant cause of Luxembourg's demographic growth.

The average age for the female population of Luxembourg is 40.2 years, compared to an average of 38.7 years for the male population. Statec's data reveals that the average age of the Grand Duchy's foreign population is younger than the average age of the Luxembourgish population.

The average age of Luxembourgish women is 42.7 years compare to 37.3 years for non-Luxembourgish women. The same applies for men, as the average age of a non-Luxembourgish man is also 37.3 years, compared to the slightly higher average of 40.1 years for Luxembourgish men.
