Due to the country's elevated traffic rates, the motorway tunnels are cleaned twice every year. Over time, the combination of exhaust fumes, dust, and climate leaves visible stains that can evolve into safety hazards. Furthermore, regular cleaning operations help maintain value and support the longevity of tunnels.
The Bridges and Roads Authority launched the year's first campaign on 15 March 2021, and it is expected to last until 27 March. They will be supported by Swiss company Franz Pfister AG, which is specialised in such cleaning operations. They dispose of advanced machineries and only employ products that have no detrimental effects on the environment. To reduce the impact on traffic, the interventions are mostly conducted over night.
The second phase will focus on preventive and curative maintenance of security equipments, technical check-ups, and network interaction. This part of the campaign is set to last until mid June. All scheduled operations across Luxembourg's motorway tunnels can be found on the following website.
