Weekly review24% increase in infections among children, hospitalisations on the rise

Every week, the Ministry of Health presents a detailed overview of the Covid-19 situation of the previous week.

For the week of 8-14 March, Luxembourg saw a 5% increase in Covid-19 cases, rising from 1,194 to 1,249. The number of identified contacts has increased by 24,5% from 2,847 to 3,669.

63,675 tests were carried out in that week, up from 61,564, an increase of 3.4%.

As of 14 March, the number of active infections stands at 2,752 (compared to 2,860 on 7 March) and the number of people ‘cured’ increased by 1,329 to 54,481. The average age of the people testing positive with Covid-19 was 37.

28 deaths are to deplored for the referenced time period, four more than the week before. The average age of the deceased was 83. This week marked the grim milestone of 700 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In hospitals, patient numbers keep rising: 95 in standard care and 27 in intensive care, compared to 86 and 21, respectively.

Incidence rate and infection sources

The positivity rate remains stable with 1.03 compared to 1.00 in the week prior. There are currently 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 191 cases. There is a 24% increase in cases in the age group of 0-14, and a 16% increase in the group 30-44. Infections have declined in the group aged 75 and over (-25%).

Between 8-14 March, 2,594 people were in isolation (-6%) and 3,725 people in quarantine (+21%).

Family remains the main source of infections, with 44,3%, followed by work (6,2%), education (6%), health sector (4,5%) and leisure (3,9%).

Vaccinations and virus mutations

12,341 vaccine doses were administered between 8-14 March. 10,892 individuals received a first jab, and 1,449 a second jab.
The sequencing coverage of the population was 23.1%, thus significantly higher than the optimal rate of 10% recommended by ECDC to have a representative sample.

Concerning the representative sampling of 411 samples carried out for week 9/2021, the following distribution can be observed:

- the British UK variant (B.1.1.7) represents 62.7% of cases;
- the South African variant SA (B.1.351) represents 18.5% of cases;
- a new case of the Brazilian variant (P.1) was detected.
