Luxembourg will soon see its first self-driving cars on public roads, albeit within strict boundaries. The government has granted Pony.ai Europe SARL authorisation to conduct supervised autonomous vehicle tests in the municipality of Lenningen for one year starting 28 March.

Minister for Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes announced the milestone decision, which permits three specially marked vehicles to operate under human supervision as part of a scientific partnership with local transport firm Voyages Emile Weber. The vehicles must display “scientific test” signage and be monitored by trained personnel at all times.

“This authorisation marks an important step for the future of mobility”, Backes stated. “Autonomous driving represents a major innovation […] and we’re committed to supporting initiatives that aim to make mobility safer and more efficient.”
