Vasiliki and Patricia stopped by RTL Today Radio to talk about Girls in Tech, ahead of the organisation’s upcoming online launch event, which is open to anyone who studies, works or wishes to get involved in the technological domain.

Vasiliki told RTL Today Radio’s Melissa Dalton that she had seen a lot of change in the tech industry, but she had struggled in her professional life due to a lack of confidence. She highlighted that “it was always men who had the spotlight”, and that while she hadn’t faced outright discrimination, it had been more difficult as a women to feel confident in her abilities.

She added that, despite efforts from private companies to improve equality, there were still more men in the industry than women.

Patricia told RTL Today Radio that there has been improvement in the industry over the last ten years. However, there has still not been enough change in the direction of equality.

She said there was an expectation when she was a child from her teachers that “girls prefer to play with dolls”, adding “how come a baby would prefer to play with anything?”.

Patricia said there is a bias in the society, stating that Girls in Tech is about “breaking the bias and allowing girls to be whatever they want to be”.
