You are right to ask, considering that most recruiters and hiring managers will spend less than ten seconds evaluating your CV, you must make sure it has an immediate impact and hold their attention for longer.
Now, I could spend a few of hours writing about the most appropriate format, however last week I came across an excellent article that must have taken a few days to create!
It’s one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen on this topic. It’s on the career site, Indeed.
The article highlights the 3 main ways to present your CV: chronological, functional (skills-based) or a combination.
The length and complexity of your work history and how close or far removed your experience meets the criteria required for the role is likely to determine the best format.
Photo ... to have or not to have!
There are still some companies in Luxembourg who may require a photograph on a CV. I don’t recommend it, but if you must, ensure it is professional and if sent by email keep in mind the size of the document, certainly under 500 KB.
Bear in mind that a recruiter or hiring manager will most likely search on LinkedIn, make sure your CV matches your LI profile. Remember to turn off your notifications when updating your LinkedIn profile in case your current employer suspects you are looking for another job.
It’s possible that having a photo on your CV or LinkedIn can lead to discrimination – age, weight, ethnic background, etc.
However, not having one is not a good idea.
Profiles without a photo is ‘incomplete’ and the algorithms LinkedIn uses mean those that are ‘complete’ show up higher in search results, that’s an advantage.
According to LinkedIn, profile with a photo are 14 times more likely to be viewed that those without one.
