With the new CLA, Mercedes is launching a whole wave of fresh models backed by a well-thought-out electric strategy.

One platform, many new models

It is quite remarkable that Mercedes is ushering in a new era with a compact four-door coupé. The new CLA does many things differently, starting with the powertrains: it will be available as a fully electric model as well as a hybrid. With EQ technology, meaning fully electric, a range of up to 792 km is promised, while up to 325 kilometres can be recharged in just 10 minutes. On top of that, Mercedes is promising its “smartest Mercedes ever” thanks to the new MB.OS operating system.

Hot on its heels comes the estate version, the CLA Shooting Brake, which is naturally aimed at more practical needs. The 405-litre boot behind the standard electric tailgate is not huge, but sporty, elegant design clearly took priority. Technically, the Shooting Brake shares its foundations with the coupé, including the panoramic roof, which is fitted as standard across all versions.

However, the most important models for Mercedes follow immediately afterwards. The first is the bestseller GLC. Its new design language stands out straight away, with the large grille recalling earlier eras. Using the electric CLA’s technology, ranges of up to 715 km on a full battery are possible without sacrificing performance – in the case of the GLC 400 4Matic, this amounts to 360 kW. Compared to its technical base, the GLC mainly offers significantly more space for passengers and luggage.

Last but not least, the new GLB with EQ technology is also launched straight away. Like its predecessor, the compact SUV aims to score points with its interior space and up to seven seats, all at a more attractive price than its bigger brother, the GLC. From both the GLC and the CLA, it inherits the MBUX Superscreen in the cabin as well as the drivetrain technology, albeit with lower power outputs.
