Residents and cross-border workers alike can benefit from Luxembourg's generous parental leave compensation. Here's how.

Already considered one of the most generous countries in the world due to its parental leave allowance, Luxembourg also offers compensation of up to €4,285 gross per month for parents to stay at home with their child.

This compensation, offered to all employees, whether they are resident or living in one of the neighbouring countries, functions as an income replacement and is calculated on the basis of the following:

  • Pensionable income declared by the employer to the Social Security Affiliation Centre during the 12 months preceding the start of parental leave (CP).
  • The average hours worked during the 12 months preceding the start of the CP.

This parental leave compensation is not unlimited, however: it is capped at five-thirds of the social minimum wage and cannot be lower than minimum wage.

In concrete terms, this means compensation can reach a gross monthly maximum of €4,284.88 for full-time parental leave, and €2,142.44 for part-time. The tables below show exactly how this varies according to the number of hours worked in Luxembourg.
