Digital association Bitkom recently conducted a number of representative studies to assess the gaming tendencies of the German population. According to their results, six out of ten people indicated that without video games, the pandemic would have driven them insane.

Before the outbreak of Covid-19, 46% of Germans stated to regularly play video games, a number which increased to 50% in 2021. The difference between men and women is relatively insignificant, 53 versus 47%.

Four out of ten people between the age of 50 and 64 play video games in 2021, an increase compared to three out of ten in 2020. 13% of people over the age of 65 indicated that they occasionally play video games.

The pandemic has further influenced the total amount of hours that people tend to play. The five hour average per week has doubled, while a third of people stated that they would struggle without video games.

For many, gaming has become an integral part of their everyday routines. 76% of people conveyed that they spent money on video games over the past twelve months, men averaging slightly more than women.

A total of 1,300 people aged 16 and over participated in the study.
