The flight, from Washington DC to San Francisco, was diverted mid-air and landed at Denver International Airport last Wednesday.
A United Airlines spokesperson told the BBC that “lavatory door became inoperative” during the flight.
The woman who was tripped inside the bathroom had to wait for an hour and was eventually freed after landing. The airline specified that she was unhurt.
A video of the attempts to open the door has been shared on social media.
