In this inaugural case brought before Judge Charlotte, she is asked to weigh in on whether it’s reasonable to ask a husband to sell his beloved car.
It’s not just any car, though. It’s a well-beloved character, praised (and criticised) regularly on RTL Today articles and social media alike.
That’s right, we’re talking about The Black Egg, aka editor Martin Jonsson’s 2013 Citroen C4 Picasso. A ridiculous car for a ridiculous man, but should he keep it?
This case was, as mentioned above, brought to us by Martin - so we will start with his arguments, followed by those of his wife. This is optional reading, which is why we hid it away (click each title below to read the respective arguments). If you wish, you can skip straight to Judge Charlotte’s ruling below.
His wife, meanwhile, provided arguments of her own:
Why does the wife think it is perfectly acceptable for her husband to use public transport but doesn’t consider this option for herself?
The wife uses his inability to park as an argument. But if he cannot park a large car, what’s the point in him driving her even bigger car? She knows this, so therefore it is a moot point.
Her car isn’t an electric car either, so why is she set on him driving one? Why is the focus on the financial implications of his car and not hers?
In fact, her car is newer, more expensive and will therefore sell for a higher price than the Citroen C4 Picasso – not everyone, after all, will appreciate the ‘magnificence’ of his car as he does…
I would also have to agree with him that it would be cheaper to continue driving his car, than to buy a new one. With prices rising everywhere, an electric car will not necessarily save you money.
Both financially as environmentally, I find her reasoning feeble at best. She should simply let him be happy with his second love, the Citroen C4, and they should only consider selling any of their cars once the maintenance starts costing more than the car is worth, like he says, or when it is financially no longer possible to keep both cars. And at that point, they should sell the car that will bring in the most, which is her car.
That would give the couple plenty of money to pay for the maintenance of the other car and have some money left. She could use a little bit of that to surprise him with a dinner in a fancy restaurant to apologize to him for trying to make him sell his second love. And while she’s at it, she may also apologize to me for having had to spend my limited and precious time on this ridiculous case!
Oh, and if all else fails, he could get a big new dog. That will justify him keeping his big car.
