Saturday 21 September 2019 marks what could be a once in a lifetime event. Not dissimilar to a solar eclipse, DC Comics say, the distinctive Bat silhouette used to hail the Dark Knight will be projected onto landmarks throughout the world.

But why? The event celebrates the 80th anniversary of the first Batman comic’s release, spawning a series of adaptations on television and film. To commemorate the inception of the DC superhero, the bat signal will illuminate eleven cities, including Melbourne, Barcelona, and Mexico City.

In additional to landmarks and skyscrapers becoming illuminated, the spire of the Empire State Building in New York will glow yellow.

If you happen to be in any of the following cities, keep an eye out for the bat signal:

  • Melbourne,'s Fed Square facing Flinders Street
  • Tokyo’s MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 at Shibuya Scramble Crossing
  • Berlin’s Potzdamer Platz 11
  • Paris’s Galeries Lafayette
  • Barcelona’s Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya
  • London’s Senate House
  • São Paulo’s Itaúsa – LMB
  • New York’s Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn
  • Montreal’s Complex Dupuis
  • Mexico City’s Torre Reforma
  • Los Angeles’s City Hall

The franchise is set to continue next month with the release of the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker.
