What's On? 27 August - 29 August7 things to do in and around Luxembourg this weekend

Josh Oudendijk
Welcome to the weekend! We're closing off this laid-back August summer month with outdoor reading, a European dance festival, workshops at Last Summer Dance festival, a tour of the Philharmonie, tempting your tastebuds at local restaurants, or a funky blues concert by Kid Colling. The choice is yours!

1. Read books (or listen to readers) in the courtyard of old city library

What: As part of the city’s summer programme
Where: City Library, 3 Rue Genistre, L-1623 Luxembourg
When: Friday, 27 August at 7pm - more info

This summer, next to the Notre-Dame Cathedral, under the shade of a majestic tree, the Cité Bibliothèque offers an open-air annex to leaf through books, magazines or newspapers. Reading sessions are on the programme as well, with authors from Luxembourg and abroad presenting their work. Lucien Czuga, together with Roger Leiner, worked on the famous Luxembourgish Superjhemp comic series, and this Friday at 7pm he will be reading from the book. If this is not your cup of tea, stroll by the area throughout the day. From 11am to 6pm, visitors will be able to read in the courtyard of the old library. Books in four different languages are available.

2. Get tickets to Aerowaves Dance Festival Luxembourg

What: European dance network
Where: Neimenster, 28 Rue Münster, L-2160 Luxembourg
When:
31 August, 2-4 September - info & tickets

While this event is not taking place over the weekend, it may be a nice one or more nights out in the following week. Each year the Aerowaves network selects 20 of the most promising emerging choreographers in Europe, and then promotes their work through cross-border performances. From Monday to Friday, two projects will take to the stage every evening at Neimenster. A 3-day pass is €49, but daily tickets are also available.

3. Spend Saturday morning at Last Summer Dance

What: Summer festival
Where: 21, porte des Ardennes L-9145 Erpeldange-sur-Sure
When: Saturday, 28 August between 10am-3pm - info here

Last Summer Dance is a romantic, cute and relaxed family festival in northern Erpeldange-sur-Sure. Unfortunately the evening shows have already been sold out, but there are still tickets available for Saturday morning, which will see concerts by D’Halunken, Hannah Ida and IRINA, as well as workshops. A great way to launch into the weekend.

4. Go behind the scenes at Philharmonie

What: Guided tour in English
Where: Philharmonie, 1 Place de l’Europe, L-1499 Luxembourg
When: Sunday, 29 August at 10.30am - info & tickets

During the summer months, the Philharmonie invites you to a ‘behind the scenes’ visit. The tour (which, by the way, is the last of the season) will lead you through the building and showcase its design, before walking through the Grand Auditorium, Salle de Musique de Chambre, Espace Découverte and Foyer. Visitors will peak into the backstage area and technical department, all places normally closed to the public, but always bustling with action during a concert. The languages of the tours are announced in advance on the website, but may be adapted to the needs of the visitors at the beginning of the tour.

5. Watch Boat People

What: 1982 film on Vietnam
Where: Cinémathèque, 17 Pl. du Théâtre, L-2613 Luxembourg
When: Tuesday, 31 August at 7pm - info & tickets

Shiomi Akutagawa, a Japanese photojournalist, travels to Vietnam to document life under communist rule. Government officials are all too happy to take him on a tour of villages that are clean, happy and healthy. But Shiomi is restless. He manages to break away from the government tour and sets out on his own. He meets Cam, a young boy, and a villager’s mistress, who become his guides to the Vietnam the government doesn’t want anyone to see.

6. Discover a special restaurant over the weekend

What: Get stuffed
Where: Several different options
When: Anytime

Our dining + drinking category in the Luxembourg Insider section showcases several fantastic restaurants around the Grand Duchy. As the weather is looking pretty miserable on both days, this is a good moment to try out something new, whether that’s a quick burger at your local bistro, a special vegan/vegetarian meal or a fancy multi-course dinner. Here’s a short video of the delightful vegan restaurant Beet.
