What's On? 26 February - 28 February7 things to do in and around Luxembourg this weekend

Josh Oudendijk
Welcome to the weekend! This one sounds promising: Charlie Chaplin with live orchestra, laughing for science, a workshop about Afro-descendants in Luxembourg, or a jazz festival with Lisa Simone, among other things. Truth is: we are spoiled for choice! Here are our favourites in one place. Enjoy the weekend!

1. Watch Charlie Chaplin with live orchestra

What: Solving a village murder mystery
Where: Philharmonie, 1 Place de l’Europe, 1499 Luxembourg
When: Friday, 26 February - Saturday, 27 February at 6pm and 8pm - tickets & info here

Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” is a classic silent comedy-drama, released in 1921, in which The Tramp stumbles upon an abandoned child and though initially reluctant, takes him in and raises him as his own. The screening comes with a live orchestral performance by the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Timothy Brock. This is truly the full-on experience of a classic film.

2. Explore Bourscheid Castle

What: 10th century Gothic structure
Where: Bourscheid Castle, Schlasswee 1, Bourscheid
When:
Friday, 26 February - Sunday, 28 February between 11am-4pm - info & tickets here

Bourscheid Castle is Luxembourg’s largest castle, an impressive structure with characteristic round towers. The castle was most likely constructed in the 10th century, and then extended in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the fortress wall was added, flanked by six Gothic towers. Nowadays, audio guides in seven different languages guide visitors round the castle, and tours are available as well. There are amazing views from the castle of the whole valley around Bourscheid. In the evening, the building is illuminated, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere.

3. HA! Laugh for Science

What: Get those muscles shaking!
Where: Online (Microsoft Teams), but hosted by Musée de l’Homme in Paris
When: Friday, 26 February at 3pm - free participation, info here

Sure, this event is not hosted in Luxembourg, but of course you may participate! The Parisian Musée de l’Homme invites you to take part in a laughter yoga workshop to experience and understand more about laughter in families. The workshop is hosted via Microsoft Teams, so there is most likely no limit to the number of attendees. The workshop is free of charge in exchange for feedback via an online questionnaire. And furthermore, here’s a Ted Talk by cognitive neuroscientist Sophie Scott sharing some surprising facts about laughter.

4. Learn about Afro-descendants in Luxembourg

What: A road towards diversity
Where: Via Zoom, organised by Finkapé
When: Saturday, 27 February at 2pm - free event, but registration required

This event aims to strengthen the visibility of Afro-descendant personalities who, through their productions, their works and their local and/or international presence, contribute to Luxembourg’s influence. How to share this information with others? By collectively editing a Wikipedia article on the subject. While the cultural and ethnic diversity of Luxembourg is well established, the visibility of Afro-descendants is sadly still very limited. Make a change in this “edit-a-thon”, which combines “edit” and “marathon” and become full Wikipedia contributors!

5. Stream Echter’Jazz festival with Lisa Simone and others

What: International stars and national artists
Where: From the comfort of your home
When: Friday, 26 February - Sunday, 28 February at 7pm - info & stream here

The Echter’Jazz Festival will bring international stars and national artists to the stage at the TRIFOLION Echternach over the upcoming weekend with three themed evenings: Big Band, Trios & Women in Jazz. The Thierry Maillard Bigband and David Linx and the Bigband Musique Militaire will kick off on Friday, the Enrico Pieranunzi Italian Trio and the Reis-Demuth-Wiltgen Trio perform on Saaturday, as well as Lisa Simone and Claire Parsons on Sunday.

6. Check out cooperationsART at Kulturfabrik

What: Final exhibition day
Where: Squatfabrik, 116 Rue du Luembourg, L-4221 Esch-sur-Alzette
When: Friday, 26 February between 2pm-6pm -

free entry, info here

Since the beginning of February, the artists of the cooperationsART collective have been making the former premises of the Keramikfabrik and the Galerie Terres Rouges vibrate with creativity. Friday, 26 February is their last residency day. Who will you be seeing? Charel’s ghetto-blaster resonates and accompanies him in his graffiti work while Francis Kirtz, seated at his table, works on his new series of point by point nude paintings. A little further on, Fatima De Moura carefully reads the press, conducts interviews and draws inspiration for writing. Kevin Schmit, meanwhile, dives into his Webcomic titled “Dead on the Art”. Tania Steinfort experiments with the ashes of her memories while Ben Kieffer, Carlo Wertheimer and Didier Scheuren let off steam in the gallery with expressionist-psychedelic drawings.

7. Immerse yourself in dance performance

What: Dance exploration
Where: Kinneksbond, 42, route d’Arlon, L-8210 Mamer
When: Friday, 26 February - Sunday, 28 February at 4.30pm and 8pm - info & tickets here

Immersed in the hippy universe of the 60s and 70s, five dancers explore different forms of “immobile journeys” that serve both as an escape and to find identity. While some trips focus on discovery or adventure with unexpected encounters, others are internal, spiritual or even poetic. As diverse as the globetrotter’s motivations may be, they always reveal, in their own way, the questioning of everyday life - becoming the master of one’s time.
