What's On? 15 January - 17 January7 things to do in and around Luxembourg this weekend

Josh Oudendijk
Welcome to the weekend! Yes, it's the first What's On of 2021! Whether you're in need of a (virtual) jazz festival or soulful RnB performance, we've got you covered. There's even a Luxembourg-made comic book on sale, as well as an open day hosted by the University of Luxembourg. The weekend is yours!

1. International Reset jazz festival - attend physically or virtually

What: Superb jazz festival with artists from around the world
Where: Neimenster, 28 Rue Münster, 2160 Luxembourg
When: Friday, 15 January and Saturday, 16 January - times vary, tickets here

RESET is a wonderful jazz festival that takes place at Neimenster once a year. It brings together a handful of top musicians from around the world, puts them together in one room for a few days and lets them perform their compositions to the public. From Australia to Hungary, from Luxembourg to Hungary: they’re all present. Now, whether you’d like to attend the festival yourself or simply stream everything from home is your choice, but this editor would suggest the full-on experience with a night out (or two, because it’s a two-day event) in the magical Grund.

2. Read Luxembourg-made comic book

What: Album “Fortific(a)tions”
Where: Can be purchased at your local bookstore, or online
When:
Always, you’re never too old for comics!

There are only a few artists working in the field of comics in Luxembourg, but a small scene of illustrators, scenographers and enthusiasts have gotten together in recent years, setting up an association. Now a new collection of comic books brings together nine Luxembourg authors, telling the story of Jacko, a dog excrement collector in the 20th century. Sometimes he takes a break on a park bench and dozes off. In his dreams, he finds himself in the past or in the future, witnessing crimes, love affairs and more.

The book depicts accurate representations of Luxembourg, including the Grand-Ducal Palace. Even if they are fictions, these stories are all anchored in a historical reality. Marie-Paule Jungblut, a specialist in public history, advised the authors in order to depict them as authentically as possible. The work will also be published in English, although we’re not quite sure when.

3. Visit the University of Luxembourg open day

What: Information day for Bachelor and Master programmes
Where: From home
When: Saturday, 16 January between 10am-4pm - more info here

Do you want to become a lawyer, or would you rather teach law? Are you fascinated by psychology? Would you like to study medicine? You’re hesitant because you don’t know what to study after leaving school? Then this event may be the place for you. The University of Luxembourg can find answers to your questions about specific study programmes at the Information Day for Bachelor and Master study programmes on 16 January 2021. The team will be available from 10am til 4pm to advise you and present the various study options. Parents are also more than welcome.

4. Attend “Behind the Screen” series

What: Local artists in the spotlight
Where: From the comfort of your home
When: Sunday, 17 January - Tuesday, 19 January at 5pm - free, info here

Mamer’s cultural centre “Kinneksbond” is organising three stay-at-home concerts between Sunday, 17 January and Tuesday, 19 January. It’s a lovely blend of moods: Marly Marques (latin), Greg Lamy & Gauthier Laurent (jazz) and Sven Sauber & Claire Parsons (Folk-Pop) will showcase 3x20minutes of wonderful music. Check out the link and tune in, it’s gonna soothe your soul.

5. See “Breaking the Waves” theatre production

What: Daring, perverse, extraordinary, controversial story
Where: Grand Theatre, 1 Boulevard Robert Schuman
When: Friday, 15 January at 7pm - info & tickets here

Based on a movie, Breaking the Waves is the story of a girl, Bess, suffering from a rare and serious disease: kindness. Bess marries Jan, an older man working on an oil platform. Their relationship is passionate. After an accident, Jan finds himself unable to move and to have sex. He doesn’t want Bess to remain attached to a paralysed man, and wants her to continue living. He asks her to sleep with other men and to share the details. Bess accepts and experiences increasingly deviant and dangerous relationships, despite the hostility of her family and the weight of her village’s religion.

6. Become a bookworm at the City library

What: Reading day
Where: Cité Bibliothèque 3, rue Genistre, Luxembourg
When: Open Saturday, 16 January from 10am-6pm - more info here

The Cité Bibliothèque offers books, audio books, films, newspapers and comics in four languages for children and teens. On Saturdays the library organises activities for children aged 4 to 8 between 10:30am and 11:30am. Take a day and take your time to explore the wide variety on offer.

7. Stream Edsun’s performance at Luxair maitenance hangar

What: Soul/RnB virtuoso
Where: Virtually at the Luxair maintenance hangar
When: Anytime that suits you

Rocklab have been doing some fantastic sessions with different artists in varying locations over the past month. Edsun is known for his soulful RnB combined with contemporary dance, and he took the show on the road...at the national airline’s maintenance hangar. How cool is that? Spoiler alert: there’s no piloting by Edsun and he also doesn’t parachute down again after liftoff. Maybe one day the budget will allow for it. But even without that this is great.
