What's On? 16 October - 18 October7 things to do in and around Luxembourg this weekend

Josh Oudendijk
Welcome to the weekend! Truth is we shouldn't be spending much time with other people during this period, but there are some events that allow us to enjoy culture and art from a safe distance: a hip-hop gig, alternative food market, a Romanian documentary, and an insight into Luxembourg's literary history during WWII - the weekend is yours!

1. Experience Martha Da’ro at De Läbbel’s gig

What: Pop/Hip-hop concert
Where: Neimënster, 28 Rue Münster, 2160 Luxembourg
When: Saturday, 17 October at 8pm - free but reservation required

As both a singer and actress, Martha Da’ro is a genre-blending artist. After her first project Soul’Art, the multi-talented Brussels based artist has taken matters into her own hands as Martha Da’ro, blending dreamy pop with hip-hop, English with French, all with a fragile, boundless emotion. This concert is part of De Läbbel’s carte blanche partnership with Neimenster - the best of hip hop and alternative music live this Autumn.

2. Shop at the alternative food market

What: Discover sustainable solutions
Where: 1 Rue de l’Aciérie, L-1112 Luxembourg, Luxembourg
When:
Sunday, 18 October between 11am-6pm

Many agree that the current agro-food system is not sustainable and won’t last for the generations to come. The alternative food market is the right place to meet those people participating in a positive change, transforming our food system with new inventions and inspiring solutions. Have a stroll and meet the promoters and defenders of responsible food! Discussions, exibitions, events, workshops, information stands...and most likely some delicious things to taste, too.

3. Let kids explore the world of Le Petit Prince

What: Non-spoken performance for the young
Where: Neimënster, 28 Rue Münster, 2160 Luxembourg
When: Saturday, 17 October at 11am and 2pm - reserve here
Who is not familiar with the story of the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry? This new, silent production describes humanity with incredible gentleness and depth, a perfect introduction for the kids. Images and sounds replace words, leaving room for interpretation for those who have not (yet) read the book. Different and yet very close to the original, the allegories and great moments of the Little Prince are brought to life through the magic of the puppets.

4. Hear guitarist Greg Lamy at Opderschmelz

What: Prolific Luxembourg jazz guitarist
Where: Opderschmelz, 1a Rue du Centenaire, L-3475 Dudelange
When: Friday, 16 October at 8pm - €20 tickets, reserve here

“A guitarist whose fresh and pure guitar sound gives rise to multiple melodic atmospheres, underlined by a particularly fluid playing. A musician with a great future”, the famous Beninese jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke once said of the Luxembourg guitarist and composer Greg Lamy. His trio is an inspiring and ambitious ensemble, harmonious and pluralist and always animated by the pleasure of playing together, thus creating a unique jazz atmosphere. A trio between swing, groove and contemporary jazz, all in the cosy atmosphere of one of the country’s most special music venues.

5. See ‘Collective’ about tragic Romanian rock club fire

What: Documentary capturing life-changing moment
Where: CNA, 1 Rue du Centenaire, 3475 Dudelange, Luxembourg
When: Sunday, 18 October at 7pm - info here

A horrible fire at the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest on October 30, 2015, at the onset of a rock concert, was one of the worst disasters in recent Romanian history, with an initial 27 people killed and 180 injured. Within a few days, fierce protests erupt, leading to the resignation of the Social Democratic government.

In the meantime, 37 of the injured die in local hospitals. Based on the testimony of a whistleblower, a sports newspaper team begins an investigation into diluted disinfectants, which were sold to all hospitals where they were further diluted, and exposes entire channels of corruption. Meanwhile the newly appointed Minister of Health in the temporary technocratic government and other key actors, faced with a horrified public, the remaining victims and their families, try to pick up the pieces. But can anything really change?

Director Alexander Nanau films the team of journalists and the minister day-to-day in a detached manner, unveiling the sinister face of the corruption infiltrating all levels. The final message is in the soundtrack: “We are how we treat each other when the day is done.” Furthermore, “Heroes look like you.” The film has won numerous awards at film festivals around the globe.

6. Learn about Luxembourg’s literature during WWII

What: Intriguing exhibition
Where: CNL, 2 Rue Emmanuel Servais, 7565 Mersch, Luxembourg
When: Monday - Friday between 9am-5pm, info here

Despite its prominent position in Luxembourg’s history, certain aspects of the Second World War remain unexplored to this day - for example, the situation of the literary world during the occupation. Who wrote? What was there to read? And how did the authors behave towards the new rulers? This comprehensive and richly illustrated exhibition formulates answers to the long-standing research gap around literary and intellectual life after the Nazi seizure of power.

Exhibits from literature, art, history and everyday culture provide access to a highly complex topic of ongoing social relevance.

7. Walk the Schiessentümpel Loop from Consdorf

What: Stunning hike
Where: Consdorfer Millen Parking Lot
When: Each day, every day
One of the most famous hikes in Luxembourg, this route takes you around ‘Little Switzerland’ and the stunning Schiessentümpel bridge. Through forests, down waterfalls and across plains. The walk is roughly 8.6km and takes two and three hours, the starting point being the Consdorfer Millen parking lot.
